What to do when you feel far from God

I’ve been there before, when I felt guilty for doing something wrong or work kept me busy so I was no longer communicating with God on a regular basis. The graciousness of God is everlasting, he knows that mankind has a tendency to fall away from him, but he is ever so loving and ready to have you come back into his wrap – around presence. If you ever feel far from God, understand that it is never too late to come back to your maker. Envision God as a Father that loves, a Father that truly loves his chid would never reject them. So, here are a few things to do when you feel far from God.

1. Have a Conversation – BE REAL

Growing up in church, I always thought there was a set way to pray, but when I started to build my own personal relationship with Christ I found out that prayer is simply a conversation with God. Release yourself from any religious notions of how to pray. Take a moment out at whatever time that works best for you and pour out ALL your heart longings, speak to God as if you were just speaking to yourself or a friend, he never judges you. Tell him your fears, failures, desires, mistakes, pains, EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. The key is to be 100% REAL. In Christ we can lay it bare, we can get it all off our chest! Tell him that you feel far from him , just speak your truth.

2. Dwell on the scriptures

One of the best ways to hear from Christ is through his word, the bible is like a treasure box full of incredible scriptures and promises that give you insight into how God thinks and what he thinks about you. Here are two wonderful verses to dwell on whilst feeling far from God:-

Matthew 11:28-30  (TPT)

28 “Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. 29 Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. 30 For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.”

Romans 8:35 (TPT)

35 Who could ever separate us from the endless love of God’s Anointed One? Absolutely no one! For nothing in the universe has the power to diminish his love toward us. Troubles, pressures, and problems are unable to come between us and heaven’s love. What about persecutions, deprivations, dangers, and death threats? No, for they are all impotent to hinder omnipotent love.

As you read over these scriptures , wait and be still and let God breathe new life into you , allow him to paint his picture of love within your heart and accept the truth that he loves you and he wants you to reconnect to him. (Something that may also help in this moment is playing music in the background. I personally love to do this, here is a link of some of my fave instrumentals)

3. Listen

Now that you have read the word, here is an outline of a prayer, but feel free to say it in your own words  “Lord I am sorry that I have been far away from you, I am ready and desire to connect with you, I open up my heart to hear you. I want to hear your voice.”

Pause and take some time to listen,  fix your mind on God, he will send down thoughts and prompts to your mind and speak words to you. Have a pen and paper ready to write down what you hear. God is always speaking but sometimes it takes some time and practice to hear, so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t feel that connection instantly. Just keep having conversations with him and you will eventually hear him.

In summary

Never feel like you can’t connect with God, the truth is he is as close to us as the very air we breathe. He is never far, but sometimes we walk away, even when you can’t feel him, know that he is always there. I hope these steps help you and if you have never known Christ and would like to have a relationship with God. Just say the words below. That’s how simple it is…

Dear Jesus, here I am , ready to have you save and restore me. I recognise that I need you, I recognise that I have lived a life of sin. Jesus I ask you to come into my heart and wipe away all my sin. I am inviting you to be my Lord , my best friend and personal saviour.
